Which alternative building material according to architect Dr Anupama Kundoo is best suited for affordable housing in India?

Dr. Anupama Kundoo is known for her in-depth material research to achieve architecture of low environmental impact, and development of building technologies that are socio-economically beneficial. She always believed that by using human resources like knowledge and ingenuity, one can save natural resources and create houses with very little impact on the environment. Last year she unveiled a prototype house built by using innovative alternative building material which caught the attention of architects around the world. Do you know what that material is?

When Dr. Anupama Kundoo speaks about affordability she is not talking about just affordability in terms of money but also in terms of its impact on environment. According to her, Lego-like blocks of a material called ferrocement, made by layering mortar or plaster over metal mesh, well suited to creating flexible and cost-efficient housing solutions, in India and elsewhere. She built a housing prototype using  a system of modular ferrocement blocks, which are stacked up to form walls and built-furniture. The blocks are hollow, so they create plenty of storage areas. This material is easy to tint, the blocks can be manufactured in different colours too.

Pune borne Dr Anupama Kundoo studied architecture from the Sir J. J. College of Architecture, University of Bombay and got her doctoral degree from Technical University of Berlin in 2008. She established herself as an architect in the Auroville where she designed and built many economically innovative buildings with energy and water efficient infrastructure adaptations. Her basic design approach is to use waste materials, unskilled labour and local communities.

Kundoo taught at the Technical University, Berlin, and Darmstadt in Hesse during 2005. She worked as Assistant Professor at Parsons the New School for Design, New York until 2011 then moving to Australia as a senior lecturer in the University of Queensland. In 2014, she shifted to Europe and began working at the European School of Architecture and Technology at the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid and has her own firm, Anupama Kundoo Architects.
